Presidents Day

Presidents Day (United States)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lincoln's Birthday
Presidents Day (also styled President's Day or Presidents' Day) is the common name for the United States federal holiday officially designated as Washington's Birthday. It is celebrated on the third Monday of February.
As the official title of the federal holiday, Washington's Birthday was originally implemented by the federal government in 1880 in the District of Columbia and expanded in 1885 to include all federal offices. As the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. In 1971 the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February.
In the late 1980s, with a push from advertisers (see detail below), the term Presidents Day began its public appearance. The theme has expanded the focus of the holiday to honor another February President, Abraham Lincoln, and often other Presidents of the United States. Although Lincoln's birthday, February 12, was never a federal holiday, approximately a dozen state governments have officially renamed their Washington's Birthday observances as "Presidents Day", "Washington and Lincoln Day", or other such designations. It is also interesting to note that "Presidents Day" is not always an all-inclusive term. In Massachusetts, while their state holiday honors "Washington's Birthday", there is also a Presidents Day Proclamation honoring the Presidents that have come from the New England area. Alabama uniquely observes the day as "Washington and Jefferson Day," even though Jefferson's birthday was in April.[1] In Connecticut, while Presidents Day is a federal holiday, Abraham Lincoln's birthday is still a state holiday, falling on February 12 regardless of the day of the week.
In Washington's home state of Virginia the holiday is legally known as "George Washington Day."

Chocolate for your Heart!

Rich, creamy, and delicious, chocolates nestled in a red-satin gift box are guaranteed to set your heart aflutter. They're also loaded with antioxidant polyphenols that guard your heart from disease by reducing "bad" LDL cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and unhealthy blood clotting.

Two studies suggest you have to eat the dark variety to get those benefits. Researchers found that in 12 subjects, eating 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate raised blood polyphenols by nearly 20 percent, but eating milk chocolate produced no elevation.

In another study, 13 people ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate every day for 2 weeks, then white chocolate with zero polyphenols for 2 weeks. During the dark-chocolate phase, their blood pressure dropped: the systolic (top) number by 5 points, the diastolic (bottom) by 2 points. White chocolate had no effect.

Cupid's Scavenger Hunt!

Valentine Game: Cupid's Tree Scavenger Hunt
Tiny little clues lead to great big fun.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Tree branch
Jar
Marbles or stones
Paper
Small gifts
String HOW TO PLAY:

1. Set up a Valentine's tree centerpiece on the dining room table; a small bare branch held upright in a jar of marbles or stones works well.

2. Write clues on small pieces of paper for items that the kids must find or make of paper and hang on the tree. Then tie the clues onto the branches of the tree.

3. When the kids come back with the last item, have small gifts waiting under the tree.TIPS:To create clues, try the following, or use your own funny riddles: 1. I like to bark and chase a stick. Draw a picture of me and hang it up quick. 2. I'm thin and long and colored red. I'm tied around the ponytail on a little girl's head. 3. I've got five points and twinkle in the sly. Cut me out of tinfoil and put me up high. 4. Although my name rhymes with stupid, I'm as cute as can be. Cut my shape out of paper and hang me on the tree. 5. I'm made of two letters and stand for a hug and a kiss. If you hang my picture on the tree, you just can't miss.
